IA. Jean Shirley’s older brother was Thomas Jasper Crawford. Jean Shirley married Roger Leland Sampson, who was born 3 May 1918 in Decorah. He was the son of Wm. LeRoy Sampson and Selma Augusta (Rognas) Sampson. His father was born 19 Feb 1888 in Decorah and his mother was born 14 Mar 1894 in Decorah. They were married 10 May 1917 in Decorah. Roger’s younger brothers were Gordon William Sampson and Lyle Durwin Sampson. Jean Shirley and Roger were married on 13 Sep 1942 at the Frankville Presbyterian Church. They had two children: Shirley Ann and Sharon Ruth. Shirley. the oldest daughter of Jean Shirley and Roger, was born in Clovis, NM. She went to school at Frankville #1 Independent Community School, then to Postville Community High School and State College of Iowa. She married Harlan Dean Foels on 18 Jun 1967 in Frankville. Their children are: Christa Lynne and Karsten Albert. Shirley taught sixth grade for six years at MFL (Monona-Farmersburg-Luana) at the Luana center and art two years at the Farmersburg and Luana centers. Her hobbies are rosemaling, gardening, and crafts. Sharon, the youngest daughter of Jean Shirley and Roger, was born at Postville. She attended the public schools of Frankville #1 and Postville Community High School and then the University of Northern Iowa. On 16 Jun 1973 she married Greg Gowdy. They later divorced and she married Larry Strait on 15 Sep 1985. Larry has two sons: Daryl and Christian. Sharon teaches Spanish at Mukwanago High School in Wisconsin. Her hobbies are sewing, quilting, and reading. Jean Shirley grew up on the family farm on the edge of Frankville, Sec. 25, Frankville Twp. She was baptized and confirmed in the Frankville Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed all of the activities of farm life, including horseback riding, family dinners, relatives coming for vacations, sleigh riding in the winter and many community and school activities. She attended the Frankville Public School through the 10th grade (at that time the school provided freshman and sophomore education) and then attended Postville High School for her junior and senior years graduating in 1939. After graduation she worked in the AAA office in Decorah, an agency of the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and later named ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service). Roger served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After the war Roger and Jean Shirley lived in Charles City, Waterloo, and then returned to Frankville to care for Jean Shirley’s mother. Roger and Jean Shirley farmed and raised their daughters Shirley and Sharon in Frankville. They were members of the Frankville Presbyterian Church where Jean Shirley served as assistant organist, treasurer, Elder, and held offices in the Women’s Association. She was an active member of Chapter FT PEO in Postville and of the Oneota Rebekah Lodge No. 175 in Decorah. She returned to work for the ASCS in 1963 and retired in 1983. Following retirement she and Roger continued to live on their farm on the edge of Frankville until Roger's death in 1994 and where Jean Shirley continues to make her home. Sampson, Maurice and Reg Sampson (Reg and Laurie Sampson) Reginald Sampson Frank Maurice Sampson was born on 9 Jun 1895, the son of John William Sampson and Florence Emma (Musser) Sampson. He was married to Anna Anderson and had four sons: Weston, Gavin, Lester and Durwin. Maurice farmed the original Sampson homestead in Pleasant Twp along with his Uncle Edwin. Edwin lived in the original Sampson house and Maurice and his family lived in another house nearby. In the 1930’s the original house burned to the ground and Edwin moved in with his nephew and family. Maurice was a quiet man that worked at a variety of things. He was a farmer, a carpenter, a painter and worked for a while at Ice Cave in Decorah. Weston was the first child born to Maurice and Anne. He was in the Air Force during World War II. Wes is married to Carolyn (Nelson) Sampson and they have one daughter, Carol. Carol is married to Verdel Dawson and they have two children, David and Dana. Wes worked as a locksman at the Lynxville, Wl dam until he retired several years ago. He and Carolyn have dealt in antiques for many years and continue to collect and sell them to this day. They reside in Lynxville. Gavin lived in Decorah all of his life. He married Dorothy (Olson) Sampson and they have three children: Barbara, Brenda and Gregg. Barbara (Sampson) Bateman Adams lives in Des Moines, IA. She is divorced and has two children, Rebecca and Robert. Brenda (Sampson) Roher is married to Richard Roher and lives in Kewaskum, Wl. They have four children: twins Pattie and Tammi, Latisha and Daniel. Tammi is divorced and has a son, Timothy. Latisha (Roher) Leitheiser is married to Scott and has a son, Anthony.
